What is Jianghu? Who is Jianghu? [Be careful when you fart, you never know what will come out.] Jianghu uses all forms of deception to dissolve what you know about ¡°art¡±. From confusion comes clarity.
The Jianghu project is a series of experimental art activities initiated by Lijiang Studio and ALAB Art Space, both based in Yunnan Province, China. In the year 2005 there are approximately 12 Jianghu activitiesnot restricted by style or location. Each specific Jianghu activity is organized by a different curator or group and involves different people and strategies. People from China and outside of China participate together in Jianghu to open corridors of artistic and cultural exchange. Artists, workers, intellectuals, amateurs etc all particiapte in Jianghu. Jianghu event locations include independent art spaces, offcial art spaces such as provincial museums, the streets, bars, and private spaces. These jianghu events are intended to make contemporary art more accessible, make resources more available and stimulate debate.
In Chinese, the enigmatic term jianghu, literally meaning ¡®rivers and lakes¡¯, can signify anything from 'a vast, unmappable place' to a certain type of kung-fu, to a social order or code that is more powerful than laws. The word encompasses meanings of danger, anarchy, and deep life experience, and of itinerant performers, charlatans, and hooligans. Using the various meanings of jianghu, these exhibitions are experimental, unpredictable activities outside of traditional structures. Jianghu has many meanings; we take all of these meanings, especially the dirtiest and most visceral ones ?C not the ones you find in the dictionary ?C for our project.
